New Plan for Crashplan

Crashplan sent out an email to their users today indicating that they will no longer support home users in a little over a year. In the immortal words of Socrates, "This blows." Many of you are using Crashplan because of our recommendation, and we rely on it ourselves.

Crashplan is urging people to move to Carbonite, but we're not excited about that. Granted, it's been a few years since we used Carbonite, but we found it at the time to be buggy, slow, and most importantly, unreliable. That's not something you want in a backup.

If they maintain their current pricing, Crashplan for Small Business is $10 per computer per month. Is this a fair price to protect your data? That's a decision that will be different for everyone, but no matter what services you end up with our basic recommendations remain the same:

  1. Everyone should have at least two backups.

  2. One of those backups should live off-site the majority of the time.

  3. The backups should be through two different methods (eg Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner).

  4. Do not think of iCloud as a backup!

If you're not following these four rules you're risking your data. We built these rules not just on things that could go wrong, but things that we've repeatedly seen go wrong.
